iPhone and Google Streetview

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

So iPhone update 2.2 has added Streetview to Google Maps. You actually need to specify a location first in order to be able to swap to Streetview. Which is done by clicking the red man next to the address, shown below:

The last one reminds me of the show ‘Fringe’:

The interface was quite responsive and fills the whole screen. It allows for zooming, vertical and horizontal panning. Swish!

Google Voice Recognition

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

After realising the newly updated Google Mobile iPhone app was failing to perform its voice recognition because of the university proxy I tested the system and found it to be quite accurate:

  • “university of melbourne”
  • “interactive system design”

However I also got the following response:

  • “tea green way.com”

Damn you google!

Print screening your iPhone

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

People complain that the iPhone doesn’t have a copy and paste text capability. I imagine this is a user interface design issue that Apple has been sitting on the fence with for a while.

This will sound crazy but… there actually is a copy/paste function in the iPhone, only it’s not for text specifically. It works for images, effectively print screens of your iPhone’s display. To demonstrate I’ve “print screened” a photo album of comic pages I’ve tried dropping on the iPhone. Unfortunately the iPhone auto compresses images to an uncontrollable degree and hence the comic panels are difficult to read (I’m working on a way around this.)

Furthermore I’ll use the screen capping to show you how you can check your 3G cellular usage in the Settings area of the iPhone:

And your “Cellular Network Data” is shown at the bottom. Not too shabby!

How do you print screen the iPhone you ask? Click the home and the off keys simultaneously. In other words, the front face button below the screen and the button on top of the iPhone to the right.

The screen will flash white and you’ll have captured your current display!

This is an effective alternative to sending a person someone’s contact details. Unfortunately since the iPhone doesn’t support rich SMSs via MMS you can only email this image data. Cool stuff nonetheless!

Haircut wait

Saturday, August 9th, 2008

I’ve been served a pretty terrible attempt at a latte while I’m waiting for my hairdresser appointment. Luckily I have the iPhone to keep me company.

3g works fine in this store and I gtalked successfully to friends via gtalk. However, 3g on the train was pretty unstable. Until optus improves the network I think I’ll be sticking to emails on the train while it’s at the stations.

I’ve also bought a case for it, the brand is griffin if your looking for one. I’d say it’s the best I’ve seen so far.

Lastly, let’s try uploading photos of my new cut from the iPhone :)

iPhone delight

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Well the Tele-choice where I purchased my iPhone from gave me a call today and I picked up my new phone shortly afterwards.

I’m truly shocked at how clever the keyboard is on this device. I’m actually misspelling every second word but it’s auto correcting marvellously.

I look forward to testing out the 3g on the train tomorrow.
