Goal met with sad factor

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Over dinner with a girl last night I discussed her new graduate job she is to begin next year – fantastic news.

The sad part is that her job only gives three weeks of holidays a year. This might be normal for graduates and the industry but it certainly feels horrific to me. It immediately reminded me of how little I saw my father sometimes while growing up.

The topic reminded me of a quote that I paraphrased to her. After looking it up now I found it to be:

Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work and driving through traffic in a car that you are still paying for – in order to get to the job you need to pay for the clothes and the car, and the house you leave vacant all day so you can afford to live in it.
Ellen Goodman

I just wish it weren’t true.
